Talbina is a soothing broth made from barley that has numerous healing properties. It can reduce the symptoms of depression, improve mood and ease stress. It also protects against diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer. The ingredients used in this broth – barley, milk and honey are all sunnah foods which possess many natural healing properties.
Ahadith mention the Prophet (pbuh) recommending Talbina as it relieves depression, stress and sorrow of the heart. This is due to the fact that this porridge is made of barley, which contains serotonin, epinephrine and dopamine, which are hormones that affect our emotions. It also has other nutrients such as vitamin B1, B6, C, folic acid and magnesium that are essential for our mental health.
Talbina is easy to prepare and reheat and is suitable for all ages and genders. To make it, add 1-2 tablespoons of barley flour (must be 100% whole grain) to a cup and half of milk. Stir over a low heat for about 10-15 minutes until it has reached a porridge consistency. Sweeten it with honey to taste. It can be consumed on its own or added to other foods to thicken them. This recipe is also suitable for people with dietary restrictions.
