| | | Chen, L. | Automated charge state determination of complex isotope-resolved mass spectra by peak-target Fourier transform read moreAbstract: This study describes a new algorithm for charge state determination of complex isotope-resolved mass spectra. This algorithm is based on peak-target Fourier transform (PTFT) of isotope packets. It is modified from the widely used Fourier transform method because Fourier transform may give ambiguous charge state assignment for low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) or overlapping isotopic clusters. The PTFT algorithm applies a novel folding strategy to enhance peaks that are symmetrically spaced about the targeted peak before applying the FT. The folding strategy multiplies each point to the high-m/z side of the targeted peak by its counterpart on the low-m/z side. A Fourier transform of this folded spectrum is thus simplified, emphasizing the charge state of the chosen ion, whereas ions of other charge states contribute less to the transformed data. An intensity-dependent technique is also proposed for charge state determination from frequency signals. The performance of PTFT is demonstrated using experimental electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectra. The results show that PTFT is robust for charge state determination of low S/N and overlapping isotopic clusters, and also useful for manual verification of potential hidden isotopic clusters that may be missed by the current analysis algorithms, i.e., AID-MS or THRASH. | | | | Colombia: Economy, Politics and Government read moreAbstract: President Pastrana presides over a country in chaos. His US$7.5 billion Plan Colombia, launched in 1999, aimed to end the 40-year civil war by reducing drug production and trafficking, boosting the depressed economy and improving the judicial system. However, much of the money is being used to support a military campaign that is escalating the conflict and hindering the countrys development. Meanwhile, weak prices for Colombias main exports - oil and coffee - and rising unemployment combined to dampen growth prospects in 2001. World of Information Business Intelligence Reports allow access to concise, clear coverage of current political and economic developments in over 100 countries. Alongside contributions from journalists and regional experts from around the world, they contain a wide variety of sectoral analysis and background information. Each Report contains an introductory overview commissioned from one of World of Informations network of contributors, an extensive list of key facts and features of the country, including macroeconomic indicators and details regarding national population, labour market and public services. The economy section focuses on monetary, fiscal and trade conditions before analysing sectoral, infrastructure and regulatory developments. Natural resources including agriculture and minerals, industry and service sectors are covered. A five-year table of key indicators invaluable for research into economic trends accompanies the report. This article is not yet tagged | 2001 |

| | | Schmidt, Rainer | Case-Based Techniques in an Antibiotics Therapy Adviser read moreAbstract: In this paper, we describe case-based techniques in a medical application. We
developed a prototype of an antibiotics therapy adviser within the ICONS project
between 1993 and 1995. Now we are going to improve and extend this prototype,
which we have already presented at the CBR workshop within XPS-95. At that time
we focused mainly on the application. Here we stress on the case-based techniques.
Some adaptations do not really belong to the Case-Based Reasoning paradigm
though information from former cases is considered. We attempted to solve the
problem of the continuously increasing number of stored cases in this
incrementally working system by generalising from specific cases to prototypes.
Here we present results of threshold settings for our prototype design. They show
that the chosen design, which was based on experiences with diagnostic tasks, is
not only advantageous for this therapeutic application, but that it contains a slight
drawback as well.

| | | Cunningham, Donald J. | Cognition as Semiosis: The Role of Inference read moreAbstract: In this paper I sketch a model of cognition from the perspective of Peircean semiotics. In this view, cognition is the action of signs or semiosis, the construction of structures of experience via signs. This process involves an irreducibly triadic relationship between three elements of sign process: sign, object and interpretant. Moreover, sign action spreads throughout an infinity of networks forming a rhizomous structure of semiosic potential. Each living organism constructs its own local connections or Umwelt based upon its unique experience and species characteristics. In this view, the base state of human cognition is a set of beliefs characterizing the Umwelt for that person. Via an interplay between genuine doubt and fixing belief through inference, the person literally constructs and reconstructs his or her Umwelt. The paper concludes by using this model to characterize learning on the World Wide Web. | 1998 |

The present state of spatial data management system and the currently available tools are restrictive in developing and analyzing complex models. Recognizing the need for better and efficient data management system and specialized tools, the College of Veterinary Medicine at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign initiated a project to build a central GIS data repository and develop specialized temporal analysis tools. This paper discusses the development of central spatial data repository and the temporal analysis tools that will be used by the College of Veterinary Medicine. This project is unique since it is the first initiative towards building the central database repository for the college research projects. This article is not yet tagged | 2003 |

| | | | Climate change impacts and adaptation assessment in Bangladesh read moreAbstract: Bangladesh is likely to be one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. This paper discusses the possible impacts of climate change in Bangladesh through tropical cyclones, storm surges, coastal erosion and back water effect. The possible increase in cyclone frequency in the Bay of Bengal, lying south of Bangladesh, due to climate change is looked at by analyzing the cyclone data for 119 yr. Both qualitative and quantitative discussions are made on cyclone intensity increase for a sea surface temperature rise of 2 and 4 degrees C. Different scenarios of storm surges under different climate change conditions are developed by using a numerical model of storm surges for the Bay of Bengal. Possible loss of land through beach erosion due to sea level rise on the eastern coast of Bangladesh is examined. Some discussions are also made on the impacts of back water effect due to sea level rise on flood situations in the country. Finally, a few remarks are made on the adaptation options for Bangladesh in the event of climate change. This article is not yet tagged | 1999 |

| | | Peuquet, Donna J. | An Event-Based Spatiotemporal Data Model (ESTDM) for Temporal Analysis of Geographical Data read moreAbstract: Representations historically used within GIS assume a world that exists only in the present. Information contained within a spatial database may be added-to or modified over time, but a sense of change or dynamics through time is not maintained. This limitation of current GIS capabilities has recently received substantial attention, given the increasingly urgent need to better understand geographical processes and the cause-and-effect interrelationships between human activities and the environment. Models proposed so-far for the representation of spatiotemporal data are extensions of traditional raster and vector representations that can be seen as location- or feature-based, respectively, and are therefore best organized for performing either location-based or feature-based queries. Neither form is as well-suited for analysing overall temporal relationships of events and patterns of events throughout a geographical area as a temporally-based representation.
In the current paper, a new spatio-temporal data model is proposed that is based on time as its organizational basis, and is thereby intended to facilitate analysis of temporal relationships and patterns of change through time. This model is named the Event-based Spatio Temporal Data Model (ESTDM). It is shown that temporally-based queries relating to locations can be implemented in an efficient and conceptually straightforward manner using ESTDM by describing algorithms for three fundamental temporally-based retrieval tasks based on this model: (1) retrieving location(s) that changed to a given value at a given time, (2) retrieving location(s) that changed to a given value over a given temporal interval, and (3) calculation of the total area that has changed to a given value over a given temporal interval. An empirical comparison of the space efficiency of ESTDM and compressed and uncompressed forms of the 'snapshot' model is also given, showing that ESTDM is also a compact representation of spatio-temporal information. | 1995 |

| | | Abello, James | Matrix Zoom: A Visual Interface to Semi-external Graphs read moreAbstract: In web data, telecommunications traffic and in epidemiological studies, dense subgraphs correspond to subsets of subjects (i.e. users, patients) that share a collection of attributes values (i.e. accessed web pages, email-calling patterns or disease diagnostic profiles). Visual and computational identification of these "clusters" becomes useful when domain experts desire to determine those factors of major influence in the formation of access and communication clusters or in the detection and contention of disease spread. With the current increases in graphic hardware capabilities and RAM sizes, it is more useful to relate graph sizes to the available screen real estate S and the amount of available RAM M, instead of the number of edges or nodes in the graph. We offer a visual interface that is parameterized by M and S and is particularly suited for navigation tasks that require the identification of subgraphs whose edge density is above certain threshold. This is achieved by providing a zoomable matrix view of the underlying data. This view is strongly coupled to a hierarchical view of the essential information elements present in the data domain. We illustrate the applicability of this work to the visual navigation of cancer incidence data and to an aggregated sample of phone call traffic. | 2004 |
