A. | Twenty years since Ottawa and Epp: researchers reflections on challenges, gains and future prospects for reducing health inequities in Canada read moreAbstract: November 2006 marked the 20-year anniversary of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and Canadas Epp Report. Encapsulating the tenets of health promotion (HP), these publications articulated a vision for reducing health inequities, and described a policy framework for achieving this vision, respectively. These documents also triggered the launch of the population health (PH) field, focused on elucidating the empirical relationships between socioeconomic gradients and population health inequities. Over two decades, a rich HP/PH theoretical and evidentiary base on socioeconomic gradients in health has established. Yet, despite valuable contributions from Canadian researchers, insufficient headway has been made in this country to achieve the Charters vision. There are numerous challenges to reducing population health inequities in Canada. Informational challenges include complexity of HP/PH evidence, and inadequate knowledge translation beyond traditional targets. Institutional challenges include the relative immunity of the healthcare sector to funding reductions, and the organization of policy responsibilities into silos. Concerns from non-healthcare sectors of health imperialism, and inter-governmental tensions are interest-related challenges, while ideological challenges include lack of media discourse on health inequities and a strong neo-liberal political climate. Gains have been made in Canada towards reducing health inequities. The HP/PH discourses are firmly entrenched in academic and policy spheres across the country, while several inter-sectoral policy initiatives are currently underway. HP/PH researchers could be more proactive in the knowledge-translation sphere by engaging other researchers outside of medicine and health, non-healthcare policy-makers, and the general public, vis-\à\-vis the media, on the health inequities knowledge base. Ultimately, significant and sustained progress will only be made if researchers and other champions recognize the inherently political aspect of their work and understand how to overcome ideologically driven resistance. | 2007 |
| | | Hennington, Élida A. | Acolhimento como prática interdisciplinar num programa de extensão universitária read moreAbstract: This article discusses the Interdisciplinary Health Promotion and Health Care Program at Vale do Rio dos Sinos University in Brazil. Beginning with an exploratory process, the study aims to analyze and comprehend the role of this community-oriented program in the education of students from different health-related disciplines at the University, as well as the program's health care role in the city of São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The central concept is that of "acolhimento" ("refuge" or "shelter"). The program involves internship grants and services to the community and aims to enhance health-related practices in various fields such as Psychology, Nutrition, Nursing, Physical Education, and Collective Health, besides interfaces with Social Service, Law, and Medicine. | 2005 |
| | | Akerman, Marco | É possível avaliar um imperativo ético? read moreAbstract: Stakeholders and institutions involved in implementing public policies, of which health promotion is the main axis, have discussed the need to improve evaluation processes in order to appropriately understand the results of these actions. This issue has been approached with diverse emphasis - seeking elements that demonstrate the effectiveness of the actions, and developing participatory evaluation tools that address the philosophical principles of the health promotion . This article briefly presents the main current perspectives of health promotion assessment based primarily on the following references: a book published by WHO, in 2001, updates the state-of-the art in evaluation of health promotion; an initiative by PAHO implemented in the past years with an emphasis on participatory evaluation methodologies; and a project on evidence and effectiveness carried out by IUHPE, as of 2002. Finally, it addresses a set of values and principles that could guide health promotion assessment. Moreover, the paper discusses three critical variables related to developing a participatory evaluation process in a healthy city project. These perspectives demonstrate the importance of establishing a conceptual landmark for evaluation, and that health promotion assessment is not exempt from values and principles. | 2004 |
